Newton Lee + Krystina Madej | Disney Stories and Games - Making Technological Innovation a Reality

Emily Carr University of Art + Design and DigiBC present a public lecture by Newton Lee and Krystina Madej.

NUS Hollywood Lab co-founder, Newton Lee will speak on the process of creating some of his most successful projects, from his work as a software engineer at Media Station, which was contracted by Disney to develop their fist CD-ROM games in the early 1990s, to his work as a technical architect and senior producer at Disney for many successful online projects. He will also present the work he’s undertaken to develop a sustainable research environment where academia and business can collaborate: his work with ACM’s online Computers in Entertainment Magazine, the Hollywood Lab, the Institute for Education, Research and Scholarships, and other new technology initiatives.

Adjunct professor at SFU SIAT, Krystina Madej, will introduce Lee and speak on Disney’s innovative use of story in new media since the early 1900s.

Lee and Madej are currently collaborating on a book that presents Disney stories in new media.

Newton Lee is the co-founder and director of NUS Hollywood Lab for interactive and digital media research and technology commercialization, with Dr. Alan Kay, Dr. Danny Hillis, and Mr. Bran Ferren as advisors.  He is the founder and president of the Institute for Education, Research, and Scholarships - a nonprofit organization that provides resources to high achieving students, scientific researchers, nonprofits, and educational organizations. He founded and was editor-in-chief of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) Computers in Entertainment Magazine that publishes research on entertainment technology. A pioneer in CD-ROM development, Newton created one of the first object-oriented scripting languages and cross-platform multimedia compilers that enabled developers to create interactivity and animation in 3 to 6 months. He has co-developed 11 CD-ROM titles including the award-winning bestsellers "The Lion King Animated Storybook," "Winnie the Pooh and the Honey Tree," and "Lamp Chop Loves Music." As a senior producer and engineer at Disney Online, he has developed innumerable games and activities for the award-winning web site and Disney's Blast.  He holds a B.S. and M.S. in computer science from Virginia Tech, an electrical engineering degree, and honorary doctorate from Vincennes University.

Krystina Madej is adjunct professor at SFU SIAT. Her research focus is the nature of narrative and the process of engagement with narrative in different media, in particular computers and game consoles. Her recent work, as a Postdoctoral Fellow with Dr. Kieran Egan, Canada Research Chair in Education, focused on imaginative understanding in children’s development. This work resulted in the co-edited book “Engaging Imagination and Developing Creativity in Education" to be published in February 2010 by Cambridge Scholars Press. She has presented at many conferences on narrative in New Media and holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Concordia, an MA in Professional Writing from Kennesaw State, and a PhD in Digital Narrative from SFU.
