    The Charles H. Scott Gallery and Emily Carr Institute Press are pleased to announce "READ Edition 1", a fundraising print portfolio published by the Emily Carr Institute Press [ECI Press]. The portfolio features works by Fiona Banner, Dan Graham, Brian Jungen, Myfanwy MacLeod, Jonathan Monk, Shannon Oksanen, Peter Piller, Frances Stark, Michael Stevenson, and Ron Terada. The Portfolio curators, Christoph Keller and Kathy Slade, invited ten international artists to respond to the theme of reading.

    Nancy Bleck, alumnus and faculty member, received an Arts, Culture & Design award May 29th at the 24th Annual YWCA of Vancouver Women of Distinction Awards. The awards honour individuals whose outstanding activities and achievements contribute to the well-being and future of the community.

    Nancy Bleck, artist, photographer and co-founder of the innovative and groundbreaking Uts'am/Witness project, has forged deep connections with the Squamish Nation and their traditional lands.

    Congratulations to Jason DaSilva, a 2001 ECI graduate and current Master student, who took home the 2007 "Emerging Innovator of the Year" award at the Canadian New Media Awards (CNMA) Ceremony in Toronto on May 28th. Media artist Sean Arden and animator Keeley Bunting, who received BMAs from Emily Carr Institute earlier this month, were the other finalists.

    The Canada Council for the Arts announced the names of the eight winners of the 2007 Governor General's Awards in Visual and Media Arts. Paul Mathieu, Ceramist and ECI Associate Professor, received the Saidye Bronfman Award for excellence in the fine crafts.

    Ian Carr-Harris, Aganetha Dyck, R. Bruce Elder, Murray Favro, Fernand Leduc and Daphne Odjig received awards for artistic achievement; and David P. Silcox received the outstanding contribution award for his work as a writer, educator, cultural administrator and arts volunteer.

    Ron Terada, ECI sessional faculty and 1991 graduate, was awarded a 2006 Victor Martyn Lynch-Staunton Award from the Canada Council for the Arts on March 14 at a ceremony at the Contemporary Art Gallery // BC Binning Gallery (the award was announced in October 2006).

    The annual awards, worth $15,000 each, recognize outstanding mid-career artists in the seven disciplines funded by the Canada Council: music, theatre, dance, visual arts, media arts, writing and publishing and interdisciplinary arts.

    For the second year in a row, an Emily Carr Institute undergraduate took home the Grand Prize for Best Digital Animation Short at Electronic Arts' Reveal 2007 awards ceremony May 8. Bartosz Nowakowski won for his film, The Legend of Boruta. Both Bartosz and the ECI Animation Department will take home $20,000. ECI's Kate Lee received third place in modeling and texturing for her film, Mano Sinistra. Last year, ECI's Joel Furtado received the Grand Prize for his film, Tree for Two.
