    ECI alumna Kimberly Baker (07) had an article published in the Common Ground’s August issue entitled, Creative License vs. Copyright Law. The article investigates how artists will be affected by Canada’s new Bill C-47, The Olympic and Paralympics Marks Act, legislation that provides the Vancouver Olympic organizers with extreme power over the symbols and language linked with the Olympics. The subject is relevant to artists who incorporate appropriation art in their practice.

    A multimedia 25-year reunion show from four artists: Jan Bell, Joanna Kobylka, Patricia Maré, Leza Macdonald. Their 1982 multimedia group graduation show at the Charles H. Scott Gallery was a celebration of the close relationships nurtured at The Emily Carr Institute in Vancouver Canada. The women sculpted, painted, photographed and imagined the future of a friendship not yet traveled. Each depicted the others in their individual mediums.

    In recognition of his many years and leadership in post-secondary education, Dr. George Pedersen, ECI Board of Governors' Chair, was recently awarded an Honorary Degree from the University College of the Fraser Valley.

    Dr. Pedersen is the former President of UBC, SFU, Royal Roads University, the University of Western Ontario, and UNBC (for a brief period); Dean and Vice President of the University of Victoria, and Chancellor of UNBC. Dr. Pedersen also had an extensive teaching career.

    Eric Karjaluoto (95), Eric Shelkie, Peter Pimentel (04) and the others at smashLAB ( continue to gain recognition for their campaign to unite the graphic design community to combat climate change. To date, hundreds of blogs, forums and sites from around the world have been discussing the Design Can Change initiative, and tens of thousands have visited the site. Groups including ICOGRADA and The Institute of Designers of Ireland have also rallied around the project.

    Robert Arndt (98), Raymond Boisjoly (06), Matthew Booth (06), Heidi Johansen (05) and Kyla Mallett (97) are among the artists particpating in the group exhibition, Between You and the Thing Itself, curated by Dan Starling (05) at the or Gallery opening June 28 through August 4.     Congratulations to North Island College students Jill Alison Banting, Shelley A. Combs, Heili Garcia, Samantha Dawn Garstang, Judith Anne Koelman, Anh Thuy Le, Kristin Marie Russell, Marjorie Lynn Sorfleet, Dallas Eden Stevenson, Simone Carmen Thompson, Jaime Alexander Witcombe and Grace Wolff who received Emily Carr Institute BFAs at a convocation ceremony June 22nd. This is the first cohort of students to complete the ECI-NIC degree partnership program.

    Ross Milne received a Salazar Student Award in the "Best of Print Design" category for his piece, Cook Book. Milne was also nominated in the Advertising Design category. Other recent graduates who were nominated for awards include: Jeff Kwok (Interactive Design) and Abi Huynh and Jeff Kwok (Print Design).

    In March, Dori Luthy-Harrison ('05) was elected for a 2-year term as the President of the Board of the Eastside Culture Crawl Society. Among its activities, the Society organizes the annual Culture Crawl which provides studio visits and sales opportunities for dozens of artists and artisans each November.
