Opportunity Description + Organization Information: 

The Maple Ridge Art Gallery is located within the The ACT Arts Centre and Theatre is operated by the Maple Ridge Pitt Meadows Arts Council. Its mission includes a commitment to engage the public in the visual arts and visual literacy through ongoing exhibitions, associated programming and educational outreach. It also provides an outstanding gallery space for exhibitions by emerging and mid career artists as well as artist groups.

Responsibilities: 

Maple Ridge Art Gallery and Gift Shop Responsibilities:

The Gallery Assistant reports to the Gallery Curator and assists in all tasks associated with installing exhibitions, managing invitation lists and performing various other administrative functions related to artist communications, creating labels and other display signage.

Exhibition Responsibilities include:

  • Type up and print labels/price sheet(s) for artwork in the Gallery
  • Assist with exhibition installations as required
  • Schedule volunteers as needed between exhibitions to assist with paint and patch and new displays
  • Maintain exhibition invitation list
  • Mail out invitations to upcoming exhibits or other gallery events

Duties in the shop will focus on display, marketing, cash and inventory management and the training of volunteers to work in the shop. The Gallery Assistant also schedules the volunteers who are largely responsible for working in the shop for both daytime and evening shifts. Some retail and/or marketing experience is preferred along with creative flair in presenting artisan work in a shop setting.

  • Gallery Shop sales reconciliation
  • Bank deposit (Petty cash cheques, money from Gallery Shop sales, and Gallery donations)
  • Replenish money in petty cash box and Gallery Shop float
  • Communicate with artisans to replenish stock in the Gallery shop
  • Update artisan files for sales and/or additions to stock
  • Schedule volunteers in the Gallery Shop
  • Input information about volunteer hours, patron numbers, total sales, etc.

Proficiency in Word and Excel are essential, and some familiarity with a Graphics and/or Web interface would be helpful as well. The candidate should enjoy working in public facility but must able to maintain attention to detail in the fulfillment of all of the above tasks.

  • Keep Gallery/Gallery Shop Website updated
  • Keep Facebook profile updated
  • Keep Bio/Volunteer book in the Gallery Shop updated
  • Change the display in the lobby display case monthly or as necessary
  • Work with the curator to maintain the gallery storage and kitchen area

Assist with hosting duties (including clean up) for meetings and receptions.

Remuneration: 

Commensurate with experience.
