Emily Carr University of Art + Design is pleased to announce the appointment of Geoff Plant, QC, as the institution's second Chancellor, effective today.

"We are honoured that Mr. Plant has accepted the appointment at this significant and exciting time in Emily Carr University's history and we look forward to the important contributions he will make as Chancellor," said Dr. Ron Burnett, President + Vice Chancellor, Emily Carr University of Art + Design.

"I was delighted and instantly said yes, when asked to take on this new role," said Mr. Plant. "I am a strong supporter of Emily Carr University, of post-secondary education in BC, and I believe this is an incredible opportunity to contribute to a dynamic university with a specialized mandate."

Mr. Plant is a partner in the Vancouver law firm Gall Legge Grant & Munroe LLP, where he provides legal and public policy advice and representation in the public and private sectors, working as a mediator and arbitrator. He was elected to the BC Legislature in 1996 and from 2001 to 2005 served as Attorney General of British Columbia and Minister responsible for Treaty Negotiations. Mr. Plant was the Minister responsible for the Citizens Assembly on Electoral Reform and the New Relationship, the first-ever political accord between the BC Government and the Province’s three aboriginal political organizations.

After this work in the political arena, Mr. Plant undertook a number of projects, including producing the report known as Access and Excellence: the Campus 2020 plan for BC’s Post-Secondary Education System. Mr. Plant has also instructed public law at the University of British Columbia and the University of Victoria.

He holds an undergraduate degree from Harvard University and law degrees from Southampton, Dalhousie and Cambridge Universities.

He serves as Board Chair for Providence Health Care, the British Columbia Land Title and Survey Authority, the Canada West Foundation, and the Dalai Lama Center for Peace and Education.

In 2012 Mr. Plant was named one of the “Top 25 Most Influential Lawyers in Canada” in the “Changemaker” category by Canadian Lawyer Magazine. Mr. Plant is the successor to Emily Carr University's founding Chancellor, John C. Kerr, whose vision and dedication has helped to shape the University. Mr. Kerr is named Chancellor Emeritus, also effective today.
