It’s All in the Movies (

The medium of cinema works through an unfolding process of perception. As a spectator of cinema, one is drawn into a dimensional world, where the experience of spectacle, narrative, and semiosis work together to percolate a film’s interest, context, and purpose. Cinema is affective, engaging, and critically contemplative. Through dynamic relations between the movement and colour of images, ambient, immersive, and musical sound, cultural and human perspective, cinema creates an altered experience of reality. This encourages individuals to reflect, through embodied and cognitive instances, on the fluctuating conditions of the world and human experience.

Clean energy, dirty energy, social energy, positive energy, negative energy, climate energy, embodied energy, resilient energy.

Do we hoard, waste, commodify, burn it, or do we store, reuse, renew it? How humans and other species live within and without natural systems of growth, change, abundance, scarcity, decay and life.

SUM Gallery's second exhibition Naked Napi presents new work by two-spirit Siksika artist Adrian Stimson. Stimson previously curated the UnSettled visual art exhibition for our 2017 Two-Spirit and Indigequeer curated Queer Arts Festival. Naked Napi is Stimson’s first solo exhibition since winning the Governor General's Award in Visual and Media Arts earlier this year.

In this site-specific installation of sculpture, drawings, and paintings, Stimson reimagines the traditional Siksika (Blackfoot) tales of Napi in the present and challenges the colonial erasure of Indigenous bodies, power, and sexual histories.

Join us for the 8th annual Short Run Comix & Arts Festival on Saturday, Nov. 3rd in Seattle. Short Run transcends the commercial “comic-con” model by enhancing the usual book expo with interactive and collaborative creative experiences.

We consistently highlight programming by women, people of color, LGBTQ+ artists, and artists with disabilities. We are not interested in movie tie-ins or autograph sales. Instead, we feature books that exist outside of mainstream media: zines about Japanese psych rock, sex transitioning and identity, DIY and punk lifestyles; comics about illness and aging; handmade books that come with scavenged moss, are sewn with dental floss, or are composed of sheets of xeroxed paper stapled in the corner with a print run of 10.
