Louise St. Pierre, PhD, researches and teaches sustainable design, ecological design, and medical design. She is co-author of internationally recognized curriculum, Okala Ecological Design, initiated Emily Carr's participation in the international Partnership for Academic Leadership in Sustainability (PALS), and established Canada's first DESIS (Design for Social Innovation and Sustainability) Lab at ECUAD. Her most recent book, Design and Nature, co-edited with Kate Fletcher and Mathilda Tham, looks at sustainable design from the point of view of our relationship with nature.
Prior to joining ECUAD, St. Pierre was Chair of the University of Washington Industrial Design Program. She has received awards and funding for Industrial Design, Exhibit Design and Ecological Design work from organizations such as the the Environmental Protection Agency, IDSA and The American Center for Design. St. Pierre was co-chair of the 2014 International Design Principles and Practices Conference. She continues to write and lecture internationally on sustainable and ecological design, with a focus on understanding systems and ecological interdependence. Currently she is collaborating with Zach Camozzi and others on Design for Biodiversity, a series of explorations that open the relationships between designers and nature.
