Over the past 20 years, Joan Carrigan has been exploring the diverse set of construction techniques and the virtual endless array of materials which have been used over millenia, to create both traditional work and more contemporary sculptural forms. It is this intrinsic diversity with the nature of basketry which has enthralled her. Joan has been teaching basketry at her studio on Salt Spring Island for 15 years and has taught and exhibited internationally, allowing her to combine her love of travel with her love of connecting with basketmakers from around the world.
