This unique painting course combines studio time with seminar-style discussion to expand students' understanding of and relationship with contemporary painting. Students will further develop their painting skills through exercises and projects that question and experiment with traditional painting approaches and techniques. Alongside active studio work, students will begin to locate their own practice within broader themes by examining diverse contemporary painters and exploring current painting discourses.

Please bring the following supplies to class:

* Acrylic Paint (Opus, Kroma, or Golden brand) in the following
colours
* 1 150 mL titanium white
* 1 60 mL hansa or cadmium yellow - middle
* 1 60 mL Raw Umber
* 1 60 mL burnt umber
* 1 60 mL azo or cadmium red - middle 
* 1 60 mL alizarin crimson or quinacridone red
* 1 60 ml phthalo blue
* 1 60 mL ultramarine blue

 **If you own oil paints in these colours, please feel free to
use them for this course** 

* 1 265 mL Acrylic Matte Medium 
* 1 long trowel shaped palette knife (around the length of small
finger)
* 1 3-6 flat brushes ranging in size, around 1" width and larger
(or Legato set from Opus to start)
* 1 Disposable paper palette (no thumb hole) or glass palette
* 1 470mL White Gesso (small tub) + old housepainting brush
* 1 Sketchbook (around 9"x12") with  1 Soft pencil (ie. 6B) and *
1 piece of charcoal
* 3 flat canvas panels to start, approx 9"x12" or larger ..... OR
"Sinoart Canvas Pad" 9x12"
* 1 Needed: 1 large surface - ie. hardboard, canvas, canvas
panel, or heavy rag paper.  Around ~ 24"x20"
*tape, scissors, paper towel and rags, spray bottle, plastic
wrap, staple gun (optional)
 
** If you are choosing to use oils, please bring 2 glass jars,
linseed oil and odourless mineral spirits**

** Please bring 1 interesting object to the first class. It
should be able to be nailed to the wall.
