CESE 102: Contemporary Critical Theory

This course introduces you to a range of issues affecting contemporary art from the mid-20th century to today. You will examine a number of themes including: the changing role of the artist; the problem of the avant-garde and originality; the idea of discourse; postmodernism and beyond; the problem of 'beauty'; nature as subject; pastoral tradition and nostalgia; ecological art; new feminism; radical art; cyber-culture and the post-human; and the new sublime. You will complete an exhibition review and a portfolio of research and writing exercises.
