COMD 310 S032: Core Studio in Comm Design

This 6-credit core studio allows for an intensive project-based learning experience in communication design. Students will be exposed to skills and theories that build on the knowledge from second year, expand their design capacities, and prepare them to work independently in fourth year.

Course content:

Topic:
Communication Design for Climate Change uses design methods to work with scientific reports, statistics, media reports, and journalism to provide rhetorical and comparative analysis, clarity, insights, and strategic approaches towards a greater understanding of the causes and effects of climate change. COMD for Climate Change makes knowledges, practices, and information about climate change tangible and accessible through design thinking, design processes, design research methods, and prototyping to produce information design, video/motion graphics, social practice projects, systems design and strategic approaches, design for re-use, and policy design. This practice also calls into question the systems and structures of design (labour, production, distribution, globalization) in order to establish contemporary and future design practices which respond to, and acknowledge, climate change as a permanent context for design production and outcomes. Our goal in this class is to position this design practice as one that understands complex systems and is capable of asserting tangible change, as it relates to climate change.
