PRAX 300 S035: Dialogues With: Photography

This third year course offers the opportunity for students to develop their practice within the discourse of contemporary and historical art discourse. Students will acquire a critical vocabulary for understanding their own trajectories in dialogue with the context and history of art, through group critiques, discussions of pertinent writings, and individual and group presentations of research on a variety of subjects related to their area of practice. A Dialogues course is an investigation of artistic practice premised on a student's own interest to situate their work in a broader discourse and professional realm. They will learn skills related to completing projects, making presentations, speaking in public, leading discussions, writing, and integrating research and knowledge within their creative practice. Weekly meetings will allow for critiques of self-directed studio projects, discussion of assigned readings, and presentations of research projects.

This course is subject to priority rules; see here.

Course content:

Topic: Dialogues with Photography

This hybrid research/studio course will engage critically with various modes of photographic practice and contemporary interdisciplinary art through critical texts and other media toward the development of a singular project over the course of the semester. The PRAX course is meant to provide students with the time, space, and critical support to experiment and consider aspects of working that they may have wanted to explore, but have not had the opportunity within the context of their education. Students should expect to develop a research and studio methodology that is specific to their own interests and work, while also challenging prior modes of working by way of new and innovative approaches. Generally, the course will offer the opportunity for students to develop a critical overview of the medium of photography, both historically and in relation to contemporary art practices.
