PAY GRADE H ($48,233 TO $51,638 PER ANNUM)

Applications are invited for a Designer to join Emily Carr University’s Communications Department and create a wide variety of design solutions, from concept to completion, to further the mission of the University. Applicants will have:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in visual communications or graphic design.
  • Minimum four years of professional design experience.
  • Advanced knowledge of design software, including Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop.
  • Knowledge of prepress best practices and expertise with prepress file preparation and proofing.
  • Experience working with digital technologies such as HTML, HTML5, and CSS.
  • Familiarity with UI design and experience using a CMS such as WordPress or Craft.
  • Strong conceptual and interpretive skills to analyze information and create design solutions.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects with tight, conflicting timelines through several revisions.
  • Knowledge in the latest design methods, practices, and principles.
  • Willingness to learn and experiment with new platforms, software, and techniques.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with keen attention to spelling and grammar.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to communicate with a broad range of individuals and stakeholders.
  • Ability to receive frequent constructive feedback.
  • Experience in photography, motion graphics, photo, and video editing experience is an asset.

Some Typical Duties:

  1. Works with detailed creative briefs, and occasionally consults directly with clients, to understand communications and marketing objective. Draws on solid problem-solving abilities and a university-wide perspective to advise on how design solutions can meet objectives. Makes recommendations on formats and specific design elements of printed and digital materials.
  2. Provides support to the Creative Lead, including concepts and design solutions for various university communications, including layout, production and prepress file preparation.
  3. Development through final design of visual themes for marketing, communications, and special projects, as assigned by the Creative Lead.
  4. Maintains brand and photo assets and responds to related requests.
  5. Maintains awareness of new developments in the field of design, and incorporates new developments into products as appropriate.
