PROGRAM: Government Communications and Public Engagement (GCPE) is a dynamic, progressive organization that supports the government in its ongoing dialogue with British Columbians. GCPE leads and coordinates government communications and public engagement through five divisions:  Communications Operations Division, Strategic Issues Division, Strategic Communications Division Government Digital Experience Division and Corporate Operations Division.

PURPOSE OF POSITION: Reporting to the Director, Graphic Communications, the graphic designer works as part of a client-oriented team to coordinate the design, management and production of a wide variety of communications materials.

JOB OVERVIEW: Reporting to the Director, Graphic Design Services, the graphic designer works as part of a client-oriented team to coordinate the design, management and production of a wide variety of communications materials.

The incumbent prepares and coordinates in-house graphic designs for printed materials, online graphics, events displays, presentations, etc., including final files for production. This position liaises with staff in GCPE, government ministries, Queen’s Printer and suppliers. 

The nature of the work of this position is fast-paced and deadline-driven, with a multitude of tasks and audiences. Multiple projects may be assigned at one time. Components include assessment of client needs, coordination of project timeline and content requirements, design presentation, continued liaison with client throughout approval stages and delivery of press-ready production files. Corporate graphic standards are maintained while providing creative and effective solutions for client’s needs.

The incumbent is expected to maintain up-to-date knowledge and expertise in graphic design trends and best practices. The graphic designer is expected to produce print/digital materials for international audiences, local interest groups, industry, government and the general public.

This position provides guidance and advice to senior management on communications design that impact a wide and diverse range of government ministry responsibilities and topics.  Advice is provided directly to the Premier's Office, GCPE executive and communications staff, Minister’s Office staff and Ministry communications staff.


Coordinating design and production of visual (print and electronic) projects by: 

  • collaborating with GCPE and ministry clients to determine communication goals and requirements for design of materials;
  • recommending reasonable project schedules and coordinating high-quality creative services for the preparation of industry-standard compatible graphic production files for high-profile government communications materials within deadlines;
  • maintaining attention to detail and quality control on assigned design projects
  • providing reasoning and rationale for designer’s recommendations while demonstrating ability to accept art direction and accommodate alteration requests;
  • establishing and maintaining positive creative working relationships with colleagues and clients;
  • maintaining best practices for computer workstation and peripheral operation including software updates, backup and archival routines;
  • investigating, advising on and/or recommending new publishing techniques and graphic technology;

Consulting/advising by: 

  • providing technical advice and creative direction to GCPE staff on high-profile, government print or digital communications;
  • providing advice for use of the BCID Program, corporate graphic standards and guidelines, marks and brand elements;
  • understanding communications procedures, practices and protocols to provide advice and guidance to staff for maximizing value, effectiveness and efficiency of communications products
