SCIE 328 - S031: Materials+Production Tech II

Course content:

Topic: Sites of Production
In this course, you will be taken to local sites of production that differ from the design shop you are familiar with at Emily Carr. We will embark on 4-6 field trips to local craft, design and manufacturing facilities, using these sites of production to inform design sprints that consider the opportunities and constraints offered by each of these approaches. We will visit small scale makers and local manufacturers such as ChopValue, Natural Pod, North Water, Nuytco Industries, AMS Industries Ltd, Arcteryx or Mustang Survival. We will explore how materials (local/non-local), scales of production (technologies/automation/systems), makers & employees (craft/skill/deskilling), quantity & quality (accuracy/precision/control) inform and inspire design.
