INDD 318 - S031: Sustainable Desn: Applied Prac

Course content:

Topic: How is industrial design evolving in light of the global ecological crisis? Where are the new opportunities for designers, and how do we continue to push the boundaries of what has traditionally been expected of industrial design? Together, we will explore a full spectrum of design strategies aimed at enabling a sustainable and equitable future. This ranges from incremental improvements, to systemic approaches that re-envision how to balance human and planetary needs (ex. slow design, circularity, design for repair, product service systems, biomimicry, material innovation, product longevity, etc.). This course features a diversity of hands-on workshops, and includes practice in life cycle assessment to uncover insightful data which can be used to support sustainable redesign strategies. The first assignment is a team project, where students will conduct research on a common household appliance from a whole systems and cultural perspective, and propose alternative means to delivering value while reducing environmental impact. The second assignment is individual: students will research and apply sustainable design strategies to support the redesign of a product of their choosing. This is an ideal fit for students working on their degree projects.
