Generative Fiction is an interactive installation combining the generative power of feedback systems with the clunky charm of analogue video interfaces to create an evolving stream of text and textures. A high-definition television displays an endless loop of scrolling words and phrases from an analogue video titler.

Screen Test: Tom

video

description

The Screen Tests are a pair of videos of canine collaborators, Tom and Sugi. The title quotes the series of films by Andy Warhol depicting close-up living portraits of his friends. As in Warhol’s works, the Screen Tests are slow-motion studies detailing minute changes of expression, and the subject’s self-consciousness in front of the camera. Each Screen Test provides a view of interspecies intimacy through the gaze of the canine looking back at the human. The viewer has an opportunity to witness the subtleties of dog perceptual sense. Each dog’s extreme concentration and steadfast observation returns the viewer’s similar attention.

Salmon People

video

description

Salmon People considers the shared ecologies of salmon and humans through videos of spawning salmon combined with human activity in the ocean and river waters that are part of this Adams River salmon population’s migration route. The project presents a below-water point of view, a realm normally unavailable to human eyes. Salmon, human, marine bird sounds make up the sonic field in the project. Salmon People presents a recombinant video-audio panorama, a constantly changing land-sea-scape, signaling the intertwined worlds of humans and nonhuman beings.

Bikeride

video

description

In Bikeride, the canine point of view is presented in relation to the urban landscape of Vancouver. Bikeride is informed by the everyday activities with dogs, Tom and Sugi. The project details the canines’ actions in relation to urban geography as they run through the city beside the artist riding her bike. Bikeride emphasizes the dog as an urban animal in  landscape continuously in flux. The soundtrack is composed from sounds of the city and dogs recorded during the rides.

For Aria Andreyev worked with canine collaborators, Sugi and Tom, to explore an archetypal Canadian landscape—Banff National Park. The narrative climaxes with Tom pictured singing a canine aria, a sonic expression of emotional connection to the environment.

Canines primarily investigate the world through scent-perception. Human noses have six million scent receptor sites, while dog noses have about three hundred million. Dogs have more genes for coding olfactory cells, more olfactory cells, and the receptors in the nose  connect directly to olfactory bulbs. This combination of more and differing types, and quicker connections, affords dogs an estimated million times more sensitivity to scent than humans.

Colorblind, A Colorful Guide to Colorblindness

video

description

This video won first prize at the 2013 Salazar Awards in the category of "Video & Animation" as well as a 2013 Applied Arts Student Award

This animation was a collaboration between myself and Elena Syrovatkina as an informative infographic for a school project. We used After Effects to create a simple style that would engage but not overwhelm.

The video describes how colorblindness is inherited through genetics as well as the different kinds of colorblindness.

During an installation of the work, audience members were able to select from different audio tracks (on headphones) while watching the work. The following 4 video clips are the same visually, taken from a recording of the live output of the generative system.  However, each clip uses a different sound track for the video.

This new work builds on earlier creative experiments in metacreation and generative video by members of the Generative Media Project. The group has come together to produce an engaging work of audio-visual art in the ambient video genre.
